Fatema Mernissi is an internationally known—and internationally published—writer of 16 books on Islam, women in Muslim society, and civic society. Her only book of fiction, DREAMS OF TRESPASS: Tales of a Harem Girlhood (Addison Wesley, 1994; paper, 1995), has been published in 26 different countries.  

In 2003, Mernissi was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Letters along with Susan Sontag.

In 2004, Mernissi was one of 3 recipients of the Erasmus Prize in Amsterdam.

Fatema Mernissi died in November 2015.

Several chairs have been established in her name since her death.
